India’s 10$ laptop is not a laptop at all. The most awaited and talked about ‘laptop’ turned to be a device without a keyboard and display.

India had been claiming that it is working on a $10 revolutionary laptop that will be a landmark in educational computing. The specifications provided by India were:

The device will support 2GB RAM
Wi-Fi and expandable hardware
Two watts power requirement

The said price was $10 – $30, which is ten times cheaper than the PCs available today in the market. It was specially developed in addition to ‘MIT-developed nonprofit One Laptop Per Child program’.

Indian education ministry had also finalized their deal with publishers: Macmillan, Tata McGraw Hill, Prentice-Hall and Vikas Publishing to provide digital textbooks and content on the $10 laptops. It was said to help poor students who can’t afford to buy paper or any type of informative printed material.

Displayed in a small size of just a 10 x 5- inch wide slab, it scarcely looked like a laptop which India had been loudly pronouncing. It is a shame to call a device like that a ‘laptop’.

It is also said to be a device that ‘could be’ an important part in laptop manufacturing. This argument has been seriously condemned by Taiwanese component manufacturers.

For a device like this, it can be said that even $10 is a high price. We suggest that India should rename the device instead of calling it a laptop.

A media report on Tuesday said that MP3 device bought by a New Zealander named Chris Ogle 29, from a thrift shop contains important US military data.

The said shop is situated in Oklahoma. The news was reported by TV One News.

Ogle bought this MP3 device only for $18, and was surprised to find the data when attached the device to his computer. The said MP3 device contained 60 data files providing information of U.S soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Details found in the device contain information as U.S social security numbers and personal details like pregnancies of female troops. Some files also detailed the information of troops and equipment, and mission briefings deployed at Afghani basis such as Bagram.

It was found after investigation that some numbers listed in the files are still working with warnings in accordance to the content release. The warnings state that content release is “prohibited by federal law.”

Peter Cozens, director of Victoria University of Wellington’s Strategic Studies Department states, “This is just slack administrative procedures which are indeed a cause of embarrassment”. Cozens also added, “It’s the sort of thing which ought not really to be in the public domain.”

It has also been reported by Los Angeles Times that some previously found devices also contained critical military informations like maps, charts, military secrets, and military intelligence reports. It is to be noted here that such informations should be kept secret and shouldn’t be disclosed in public.

The Lexmark X560n is a heavyweight coloured multifunctional device that is specifically designed for medium-sized workgroups or organisations.

It merges printing; copying, faxing and scanning into one single network oriented device that helps you save on office room, hardware budgets and energy.

Compatibility:

It is fairly heavy in weight and has the conventional look of a scanner on top of a printer. The X560n is strong, dependable and readily works with the PCL 6 and PostScript compatibility. It can be easily configured into any IT environment.

It works with almost all the operating systems existing today such as Apple Mac OS X 10 or later, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows XP x64, Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS3, Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS4, and SUSE Linux 9.0

Performance:

The scanner is incorporated with a fifty sheet automatic document feeder and furthermore, the paper tray can accommodate as many as 400 sheets with an additional 150 sheets in the multipurpose tray that can be easily folded from the front.

It is equipped with a logical control panel that seems to be a little crowded but comes with a large, self-lit LCD display. The Lexmark X560n comes with a USB cord, Ethernet and parallel connections as standard and also includes all the fax functions.

It claims to have a speed of 30ppm for black and white print whereas 20ppm for colour. However, our tests concluded 22ppm and 12ppm respectively, even at the time of printing long documents. It comes with an extra drawer and a floor stand.

This could still be considered a quick printer with an excellent print quality. Black text is sharp and the colour graphics are vivid. The photography prints turned out to be more natural then expected. The printing costs are also comparatively low. If we reveal our analysis, it comes out to be 1.6p for black print and 5.4p for a colour print.

Setting up and maintaining this multipurpose device is pretty simple. All you need to do is fold the front cover and there are four drum and toner cartridges. They are stacked one above the other in the cabin. It is often believed that it is easier to maintain a device that integrates drum and toner into separate cartridges. In this particular model, the cartridges slide effortlessly in and place it easily, which makes the maintenance part even simpler.

It is a wired printer and available in only one colour – white. The manufacturer guarantee is for one year but you can always get the extended warranty for further peace of mind.

Lexmark X560n does not support photo printing. However, it is perfect for all your document needs such as printing presentations, memos, and letters to spreadsheets and news.

On the whole, some of the major pros for this product would be the decent operating costs, effortless use, huge display, speed and the quality of print. However, the price of this printer comes out to be around 640 pounds in the UK market, which is fairly high.
